Artist Profile

John Hodgett

John Hodgett was born in Glasgow in 1949 and initially trained as a sculptor. His interest in outdoor pursuits led to him to start photographing the landscape rather than adding to it, and this resulted in his first solo exhibition of landscape photographs in 1980.

Since his early landscape work, he has undertaken a wide range of urban, rural and art based projects, including a series about the canal system in Birmingham, a study of inner city people and places, and the impact that building the M6 Toll Road had on it’s immediate environment.

He has exhibited widely in the UK at venues including the Ikon Gallery and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, plus others in China, USA and Sweden. As well as completing his personal projects, he has worked for a number of commercial clients undertaking mostly editorial photography.

His work is held in public collections, including Tate Britain and the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, as well as by private and corporate collectors. He has published work in the media ranging from Vogue to the British Journal of Photography.
